Apprentice Cabinetmaker

Role Description:

Southern Stars Custom Woodwork is seeking an Apprentice Cabinetmaker to join our team in Strathmore, Alberta. In this role, you will assist in designing & building custom cabinets, operate woodworking tools, learn to interpret cabinetry plans, document daily social media, and contribute to wood finishing. You’ll also maintain supplies, keep machinery in top condition, and ensure a safe workspace. As part of your apprenticeship, you’ll work towards a journeyman certification while supporting daily operations. Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of woodworking tools and machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Learn to read and interpret cabinetry plans and cut lists.
  • Wood finishing cabinet parts – preparation and application of a finish which includes sanding, staining and spray coat applications.
  • Ensure consumable supplies are stocked and accounted for including screws, nails, glues, wood coatings and lubricants in the shop and tool trailer.
  • Maintenance – All machinery is lubricated and clean in preparation for future use.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Engage in ongoing learning and development under the mentorship of senior cabinet makers.
  • Use lean manufacturing principles.
  • Onsite installation – duties include delivery, setup, installation and pack up/clean.
  • Enroll in and maintain an active apprenticeship, working towards journeyman certification.
  • Provide support in daily operational or administrative tasks.
  • Complete and maintain daily checklists.
  • Capture daily media for use in personal client updates and social media.
  • Ensure company branded apparel is worn during work hours. (Shop & Onsite)

Qualifications:

  • Highschool diploma or GED
  • Able and willing to enroll in or currently participating in a related apprenticeship program
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and time management skills
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the use of tools
  • Motivated self-starter, self directed with a willingness to learn and problem solving ability
  • Results oriented – demonstrates a sense of pride in workmanship
  • Follow through on commitments, meets deadlines and takes ownership of responsibilities
  • Physically able to move, maneuver, lift, push etc up to 22kgs or 50lbs on a regular basis
  • Lean manufacturing experience would be an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Mobile up to 100% of the time, standing, walking crouching, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, maneuvering, side carrying, low level or above the shoulder outside and inside partially or fully constructed homes
  • Operating a small handtools and large tools majority of the time – frequent repetitive movements, grasping, holding, and fingering dexterity to manipulate small hand tools
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired
  • Ability to move and/or lift 22 kgs or 50 lbs frequently
  • Working inside the workshop or customer homes, some inclement exposure possible, generally temperature controlled and comfortable
  • Common exposure to dust, dirt or other conditions that may produce mild discomfort
  • Some exposure to factors that are likely to produce mental stress for some people including: working within tight deadlines, problem solving requirements, keen attention to detail, strong safety mindedness, and communication with customers (customer service ability)

Compensation, Breaks & Perks:

Starting Wage: $17.00/hr

Starting Hours: 40 Hours Per Week

Starting Schedule: Monday – Friday

Breaks: 30 Minute Lunch & 15 Minute Break
